North Carolina’s newest small luxury hotel opened recently in Raleigh’s historic Boylan Heights neighborhood. Visionary owners Sarah and Jeff Shepherd resurrected Montfort Hall, the 10,000 square foot pre-Civil War Italianate-style mansion (and National Historic Landmark) as a hotel with nine ensuite guest rooms and an event setting for up to 150 be a pillar of hospitality and beauty for the city and global travelers alike. “Authenticity and top-notch service, that Jeff and I have enjoyed on our world travels, is what inspired us to create a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel. We are excited to share unique and memorable experiences with our friends, family and community at Heights House,” explained Sarah Shepherd.

Design
Owners Sarah and Jeff Shepherd worked in collaboration with Maurer Architecture, Greg Paul Builders, and Bryan Costello Design to restore, renovate, and design the interiors in this rare, historic property. Meticulous care was taken to maintain the integrity of the original architecture while incorporating modern and vintage touches; artwork, fixtures, vintage rugs, and custom furniture were all hand selected.

The Heights House Hotel was named for its location in Raleigh's cozy historic Boylan Heights neighborhood, and the mansion's stunning architectural features have been lovingly restored -- from 15-foot ceilings and original hardwoods to ten fireplaces and grand common spaces. Seasoned travelers will recognize the gracious service and attention to detail that imbue five-star guest experiences. From the authentic and memorable design to an inspired and generous approach to hospitality, Heights House Hotel is a welcoming, inclusive destination for both the local community and today’s discerning voyager.

History of Montfort Hall

Montfort Hall was commissioned in 1858 by William Montfort Boylan with the guidance of British architect William Percival. The Italianate style mansion was completed in 1860 and is one of the few remaining pre-civil war houses in the Raleigh area and is a National and Raleigh Historic Landmark.  Percival’s other notable North Carolina commissions include New East and New West dormitories at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Calvary Episcopal Church and the Barracks, a private residence, both located in Tarboro. William Montfort Boylan died in 1899. In 1907, the land around Montfort Hall was sold and subdivided as Boylan Heights, one of the city’s first planned suburban neighborhoods. Over the past 162 years, the house has seen an array of owners, renovations, restorations, and changes including the addition of a wrap-around porch early in the 20th century which new owners removed in the 1980, returning the exterior of the building to its original appearance. The home was incredibly well built, and the structure has truly stood the test of time.

American Cedar & Millwork is proud to have provided several exterior doors from Rogue Valley and Marvin, Signature Ultimate double hung windows by Marvin and Trustile interior doors to match existing historic doors.
