Course Description:

Windows are character-defining features of homes. Working with homeowners to advise them on the best course of action takes knowledge of window construction, conditions assessment, local historic district regulation, energy savings, and cost management. This course will explore residential window options for properties in and outside historic districts. The standards and guidelines from the Secretary of Interior will be introduced and reviewed for their influence on residential projects.  A list of the various aspects of window replacement homeowners and architects need to balance will be considered and reviewed.  Case studies will be shared to demonstrate how factors of rehabilitation and window replacement apply to residential historic projects. 

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify research, planning and preparation needed for historic rehabilitation.
  2. Evaluate conditions of the windows and the overall project goals to inform decisions to repair or replace.
  3. Formulate best solution if windows are to be replaced.
  4. Apply lessons learns from case studies where standards and guidelines were followed.
